ChatGPT is a game-changer in the world of Artificial Intelligence. The chatbot was released at the end of November 2022, and within a few months, it reached over 100 million users, with close to 600 million monthly visits. Chatbots have been around for quite a while, but what sets ChatGPT apart is its impressive training dataset, which enables it to answer an incredible range of questions and requests. The chatbot was even put to the ultimate test, the US lawyer bar exam, and while it only achieved a C+ compared to its classmate's B+, this was still a remarkable achievement.

Within a startup, it is common to feel overwhelmed juggling multiple responsibilities, such as market research, financial planning, and business planning. The great thing about ChatGPT is that it can solve as well as cater its solution to your needs. For example, do you need a quick one-minute sales pitch to investors highlighting your product’s benefits? ChatGPT has you covered. In a way, ChatGPT is like your sidekick, always there to help you out regardless of the problem you present to it. Whether you’re stuck on a problem, seeking insights to make informed decisions, or looking to simply offload some work. Some important tasks you could use ChatGPT for include: data analysis, competitor research, or finding funding opportunities. Simply provide a prompt such as “Could you provide me with some marketing strategies for my product?” or “What are the current trends in my industry, and how can I benefit from them?” and let ChatGPT do the rest.

Startups fail for many reasons, but they usually boil down to two reasons: a lack of time, and a lack of knowledge. Oftentimes, the number of tasks along with the time sensitivity in scaling up a startup means resources are stretched thin. Combine this with other responsibilities in your day-to-day life and it's easy to see you’ll need extra help or team members. But oftentimes, the high risk of a startup deters other members from joining your team, so while you’re still in the early phase, you could seek out help from ChatGPT to offer you guidance on your venture. Marketers have found great success using ChatGPT to conduct their market research and using that research to tailor their message to gain customers.

Overall ChatGPT is a rapidly developing tool and it would be valuable to keep a close eye on it. With its endless amount of knowledge, flexibility, and accessibility, it is the perfect tool for entrepreneurs to navigate the unknown as they pursue their goals. On a different note, the rise of ChatGPT has made many educational institutions worried, due to the ability of the AI tool to answer their assignments and write papers, which they believe will detract from students’ learning experience. This has raised the need for ethical guidelines and a discussion of how education will be impacted by this powerful tool. The rise in ChatGPT’s popularity has forced the development of “AI plagiarism detection tools”, in order to catch students who copy-paste essays and to dissuade them from using such tools. At HKUST, they recognize the ability of ChatGPT to transform both research and education and have given staff the ability to create their own guidelines on the usage of the app. As ChatGPT continues to evolve, we can expect even greater things to come in the future.
